Managing Mentally Ill Youth

Course Outline:

In many communities, detention staff are viewed as professionals who are the only ones trained to deal with severely aggressive youth effectively.  Recent statistics indicate that the number of youth in our facilities with chronic health or mental health needs is increasing.   Recognizing and managing the youth with mental disorders is a security issue as well as a health issue and it is important to identify these youth in or to ensure a safe and secure environment in the facility.  This class will provide participants the information necessary to recognize the signs of mental illness, identify common disorders, anticipate behaviors that could jeopardize safety, and provide skills for managing mentally ill youth
